“And do you promise never to use magic outside Coven Road—apart from in the direst of circumstances?”

“I promise.”

“And finally, do you promise never to bring anyone who isn’t a witch to Coven Road, without prior permission from myself?”

“I promise.”

“And should you break any of the promises you will accept the consequence—banishment from Coven Road.”

I definitely wasn’t going to break any of the promises—not ever. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to say “I promise” again but it obviously didn’t matter. Zorellda had turned to everyone else.

“Please stand,” she said.

There was rustling and chair-scraping as everyone stood up.

“You have all heard Bella Donna’s promises?”

“We have,” replied every voice in the hall.

“And you will all do everything you can to help her keep them?”

“We will,” the voices said.

“Then let the party begin,” said Zorellda.
